Dawley Town Hall is located at the top of New Street in Dawley and can also be found by turning right at the bottom of Dawley High Street. The Town Hall has been a community venue since 1873 when it was originally a Temperance Hall. Great Dawley Town Council has been committed to refurbishing this building of local, historical significance and its facilities to serve the local community.
The Annex is now linked to Dawley Town Hall providing secure access to one or both sites, featuring a kitchen, private toilet, meeting room & reception area. The building now open for Community Groups and local organisations reaching out to Dawley Residents. Great Dawley Town Council declared a Climate Emergency as part of a Council Meeting back in April 2021, to acknowledge that the Town Council committed to being more sustainable now and in the future. Working with Telford & Wrekin Council and other partners, the Town Council have been delivering many projects to hit this head on.
To date, the Town Council improved its community buildings by upgrading the windows, heating systems, loft insulation, LED lighting and smart meters for energy usage. As Dawley Town Hall is hired/used by the community regularly, we wanted to include them in the consultation of potential projects to help us be more sustainable. It was suggested that Solar Panels on the roof of the building would reduce the cost of energy bills and that money could be redirected to the community; either by improving the buildings further with more enhancements, keeping hire costs to a minimum or to fund projects within the wider community to benefit the local community.
Fast forward to November 2021, and we now have our solar panels in place and moving us forward with our sustainability plans. We were very grateful that the project has been assisted by the Marches Renewable Energy (MarRE) Grant Scheme.
The project received £10,447.50 of funding from the England European Regional Development Fund as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020. Established by the European Union, the European Regional Development Fund helps local areas like us stimulate their economic development by investing in projects which will support innovation, businesses, create jobs and local community regeneration.
